The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the American president began displaying the public his plans for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to construct it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and presently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have dared – really, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.
We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he denounced in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades as opposed to months, however it is still disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre among Americans might have little sense of him since they are skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically not the narrative of a powerful ruler arising; instead, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his message focuses on affection for other people, specifically for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to present the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever someone steals your jacket you must offer him your sweater as well.
The evident and direct fact that the Jesus of the gospels advocates for a type of radical love centered on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Finest Within Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to see the persistent defiance regarding Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided great solace to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and appeals to the best parts of American history.
We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you receive him and welcome him or not?
The nation is most protected, essentially, by reference to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is best defended by relationship to what makes it unique and beautiful, which is the example of Jesus. In neither case does it suggest pretending the most negative of both America and Christianity did not happen; it represents both meekness and belief, a combination that serious American Christians should embrace.
